PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline extended? The last date for linking PAN with Aadhaar has been extended till 30, June 2021, from 31, March 2021. The Income Tax department declared in its latest update on 31, March 2021 (Wednesday).

Taking to Twitter the I-T department wrote: “Central Government extends the last date for linking of Aadhaar number with PAN from 31st March, 2021 to 30th June, 2021, in view of the difficulties arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In another tweet, it said: “Date for issue of notice under section 148 of Income-tax Act,1961, passing of consequential order for direction issued by the Dispute Resolution Panel (DRP) & processing of equalisation levy statements also extended to 30th April 2021.”

What is PAN?

The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a single ten-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the Income Tax Department. It is an essential financial document.

What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is issued by the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) to a resident of India. PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the I-T department to an entity, person, or firm.

This is the 9th time that the last date has been extended for the public to link their PAN with Aadhaar. Now, you have another three months to June 30, 2021, for intimating the Aadhaar card number to the Income Tax Department for linking the UID number to tax payers’ PAN.

Users had reported problems

The earlier the last date was March 31, 2021. During the day, users had reported problems with the IT department website.

Last year in September, the Supreme Court had announced the Centre’s flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid and held that the biometric ID would persist mandatory for the filing of Income Tax returns and allotment of the Permanent Account Number (PAN).

Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act states that every person having Permanent Account Number (PAN) as of July 1, 2017, and is eligible to get Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar card number to income tax authorities.
